There was a LOT of fun happening last night in Oakland as the members and guests of the Pittsburgh Chapter of ISES enjoyed themselves thoroughly at the BURGERS, BOWLING & BANANA SPLITS event held at the Pittsburgh Athletic Association!

Many of the established members of the Greater Pittsburgh ISES Chapter and their wonderful guests, MPI Pittsburgh and Visit Pittsburgh were in atten-dance rocking the night away to a 1950s-themed event complete with a Soda Fountain, soda Jerks (no longer politically correct, I'm sure!), burgers, banana splits, bowling and 1950s "Hop" music provided by none other than the phenomenal Kelli Burns of Kelli Burns DJ Entertainment dressed in full 1950s regalia, complete with her own bowling shirt and white anklets!

Sheila Weiner, Ed Amori and Lori Upperman deserve a special thank you for putting the program together for everyone - as always, they did a wonderful job! It was a great opportunity for Pittsburgh ISES members and their guests to come together for a night of networking and merriment. I thought I'd provide a sampling of images of the evenings happenings so everyone could see how much fun really does happen at an ISES event - ENJOY!

It was FUN! The women we photographed were fun to work with, Elizabeth and I had a blast, and our good friend and stellar makeup artist, Rachael Ryan of Ryan Makeup put on the glam for our models!

Yes, that was the operative word: FUN! It's the whole point of the sessions - to encourage a little fun and excitement for couples, or to celebrate the vivacious and sexy side of women for themselves! Nothing like a beautiful image of you when you are looking and feeling your absolute sexiest, right?! Whether it is for you or for someone you love.

I couldn't have been more honored to have such an important role capturing and creating memories for my couples.

Every wedding was so beautiful...so special...
...there was a couple whose sibling from a previous wedding had me as their photographer, one couple was near famous because of the bride's affiliation with a popular TV show, there was one bride with a family association to a beloved local sports team, another couple where the groom's family flew in from across the pond, one who had a band play in the living-room of their house so the bride's beloved bed-ridden grandfather could enjoy and participate in her big day, another whose wedding was on the country estate of her parents - wow! what a transformation that was! - most of the couples were from out of town, some are in the theatrical arts, one bride whose heritage is from La Isla de Encanto (Puerto Rico), another couple whose wedding was entirely family oriented all the way down to her brother, a priest, participated in her ceremony, there was a couple who both are doctors and then my first, official and legal gay wedding where I was flown to a private resort in Massachusetts to partake in perhaps THE most intimate and emotional ceremony I've ever witnessed... These couples truly value their photography and trusted their photographer, and for that I am so grateful. I value each and every one of them tremendously in return.

CONGRATULATIONS to all my 2009 couples! I couldn't be more thrilled for all of you and I look forward to continuing our relationship through the years as your lives progress in a blessed way! Happy New Year!

We took a day trip home last Saturday to celebrate yet another birthday with another one of those wonderful and special angels walking the earth; my Momma.

Mom just turned 84 and she's not ashamed to say it! Look at her skin - could it be any more beautiful at her age? (I refused to retouch this photo!) She will probably tell you it's all that good livin' she's always done. You know, like laundry, house keeping, working outside in the yard, and at Hammermill too, but most importantly, it's probably because of all the chocolate she's ever eaten...and that is a LOT of chocolate!

My mother can pretty much run circles around everyone I know; I've never seen someone w/ so much energy and spunk! She cooks, and cleans and cooks and cleans for everyone. And on occasion she'll even help me organize my paperwork - she loves to be busy. And look at that mischievous but sweet smile. It's there 'cause she really does possess both of those qualities simultaneously! This woman is P-U-R-E goodness to the core! She can still put me in my place too with a resounding "I don't care how old you are you will always be my baby" remark that can still leave me defenseless when trying to tell her that I'm an adult and can take care of myself! What typically follows that remark is her handing me a container of her frozen homemade red sauce (or gravy, as some Italians call it) and meatballs to take home, which to refuse is nearly a sin.

She's an angel, I tell you, with little horns peeking from beneath her halo! I wish I could share her with everyone who needs a good mom; no I take that back...with anyone who needs the BEST mom on earth. You've not met her yet, but I can tell you...if you did you'd just love her!

My mom and my dad; how fortunate am I? That's one of those rhetorical questions that really doesn't need answering...I already know...VERY fortunate!

It seems that with each wedding I photograph I'm given the gift of working with some of the most wonderful people; each being authentic individuals that are sweet, sincere, kind, grounded, unpretentious and some of the BEST people you'd ever want to meet and spend the day with. I truly have such a special place in my heart for all my clients, past and current. Laura, Luke and their families were another beautiful example of the kind of client I love and am fortunate to have in my life!

Laura + Luke's wedding was the last of my season and a perfect way to end a great 2009 year of beautiful weddings with wonderful couples! Please enjoy the images, then read on below for more of my thoughts and information on the vendors that made their day special. And, for the first person who spots the "mystery guest" in one of the photos below and posts it first HERE ON THE BLOG, you'll receive a gift card from me! This mystery guest just HAD to be with Laura + Luke on their big day!

I LOVE love! So for me, photographing weddings is the ultimate gift where I get to immerse myself in happiness and the boundless love of couples and their families while doing what I love to do! Then, I get to give that gift of love right back to my couples and their families through the beautiful imagery I create for them.

Carola + Shawn and their families were no exception to that rule - lucky me! What a wonderful group of down-to-earth, fun-loving, caring and delightful people. I love you all...BIG!

We had plenty of time to take photos, as Carola and Shawn elected to make their photographs a priority and met prior to the ceremony. This is such a smart thing to do and I promise to elaborate on why in another blog post. So, we enjoyed photographing family initially at the Omni William Penn Hotel in downtown Pittsburgh, then moved on to Oakland for photos of the wedding party and Carola + Shawn at Mellon Institute, otherwise affectionately known as "the columns." There are so many images from the day that I actually didn't know where to begin to choose, so below is una pequeña muestra sampling so everyone can quell their excitement a bit longer - ENJOY!

This was one well planned and organized wedding, all thanks to the wonderful event designer Simone Hudson of 5Senses Events! I have had the good fortune of working with Simone on numerous occasions, and can testify first hand to Simone's stellar ability to stylishly dress an event and her delightfully passionate personality towards her work! Simone took the room with a view on the 31st Floor of the Regional Enterprise Tower in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh, and turned it into a chic boutique event! Beautifully executed, Simone!

PJ The DJ rocked the house with fabulous music all night - you were awesome PJ! Mucho musica de Latino para los Boricuas! Wepa! It was great to work with you again PJ! I included a photo of you here because you truly "made" the night with the music!

The food was delicious, the atmosphere fierce, the family and guests warm, welcoming and fun, and the entire day a DELIGHT. Thank you for having Karen and me with you - it was an honor and a pleasure!

This is the first of many ideas I have in mind that are meant to present this concept. It is a joy for me to finally be actualizing this Art Photography project after having conceptualized it for at least four years now! I was INSPIRED to embark on this journey in composition and creativity as a means to broaden my ability to view an original image differently, and in many different ways. My hopes are that the photographers that visit my blog will consider integrating this idea for themselves. I would suspect this creative concept is not new, but I've not seen it or previously done it myself, so here is my version...

THE IMAGE WITHIN:
A visual enigma of many photographic compositions extracted from the whole.

The Original Image:

When one views a whole image in segments based solely on colors, lines, light, clarity or lack thereof, it is possible to create a number of abstract photographic images, no matter what the subject. What I did was to photograph a natural scene then dissect it by horizontally and vertically cropping areas that I felt were visually dynamic, concerning myself more with the abstractions and not clarity - the vertical crops are represented in the images below that have the white line separating two images. The original image above of Bear Run was taken in open shade at Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater in Mill Run, PA near Ohiopyle.

The Image Within:

This project could also be done at the time you were photographing a subject instead of in post-processing - which could pose to be even more challenging as a creative exercise - but, I think creating many images from one original image in post-processing can afford us more time to look and consider composition. Either way it is an interesting way to challenge your creativity. ENJOY!

I am drawn to Nature and the myriad of colors it presents to us. The vivid colors in the abstracted images seem even more brilliant to me, and I have a number of favorites that are mostly of the horizontal crop. Overall, I am pleased with my results and think that the original image, and the many born from it, are simply delicious! And I LOVE the vast difference between these fluid (literally!) images and the hard lines in my previous post of my Architectural Photography, but both installments have been so refreshing and invigorating for me.

There is a saying: "A picture is worth a thousand words."

Let's see if it's true!

I refer to pictures as images, because the word "image" seems to suggest a deeper meaning to the subject captured. Images are, or can become, stories. Stories often evoke emotions and that is what I'd like to try to get at with all of you who choose to participate in the inaugural Joanne Bartone Photography Collaborative Art Projects with me.

Art Project #1: The 1000 Words Project v1:
I'd like to collect 1000 words to describe your thoughts and feelings when you look at the image in this note. Feel free to contribute your thoughts and feelings under Comments beneath this note as words, either in sentence form, or as one word, or as a number of single words, or even as a poem if you so choose. The most important thing is that you describe your thoughts and feelings that the image evokes in you when you look at it.

Please encourage everyone, young, old and in-between to participate in this project. If you are a teacher, share it with your class. If you are a student, share it with your teacher.

I have some great ideas for where the collection of the Art Projects I have planned will end up - and this is just one of many Art Projects I do have planned. Perhaps the end result will be a book with all of the projects in it, or perhaps they'll just stay here, virtually. But either way, it'll be OUR collaborative effort and I am very interested to see how we all relate to the same image as individuals and collectively!

I so rarely get to indulge myself in my Art Photography and it's something that I so badly want to do. It calls to me daily, constantly even, so I've been paying more and more attention to those callings and have begun to nurture the art side of my photography more.

I was fortunate to have a couple of long weekends away from Pittsburgh a few weeks ago. Combining a little business with pleasure, we traveled to both Washington, D.C. and Boston, MA. I was grateful for blue skies and the opportunity to be outside, walking and walking, on what were two gloriously sunny and warm weekends. I always take a camera with me when I go away so I can photograph the local flavors, no matter what they may be.

I left my Social Work career of seventeen years when I was the Director of an Inpatient Treatment Facility. Returning to school for photography and embarking on my new career as an adult, I was drawn to Abstract and Exterior Architectural Photography, and I still am. I love the disconnect from people in Architectural imagery. I so enjoy the angles, colors, lines and the organic visuals of how earth and building meet, or how building meets sky, sometimes making sense and many times making no sense. I love how huge buildings that seem invasive, constricting and suffocating to us on the ground appear so free in the sky. Reflections, abstractions; so different from documenting people. So beautiful in its own right.

One of my Architectural Photography images won an International Photography Award in 2005 in the Beauty: Camera Eye of the Beholder: Architecture category of a WIPI competition. I was thrilled - I still am!

Needless to say, I'll be presenting a lot more of my Art Photography here on the blog. I must remind myself more often that my Art is a visual respite that refuels my spirit and helps my soul soar!

On Wednesday, November 4, 2009 and January Sunday, January 10, 2010, we will be holding a Boudoir Gala here in Pittsburgh where you will have the opportunity to be photographed by two Award-winning Professional Photographers. The end result will be artistic and glamorous images of you presented in a beautiful book as a gift for yourself, or yours for giving!

YOUR MINI BOUDOIR GALA SESSION INCLUDES:
Each woman arrives with her hair styled as they wish to be photographed and receives:
Makeup applied by a Professional Makeup Artist.
Up to two outfit changes for the shoot.
30 minute Intimates/Boudoir Shoot with either Joanne or Elizabeth.
A 5x4 Gift Book that will be descretely delivered for the holiday of choice.
All high-resolution images presented on disc that include printing rights.
INVESTMENT: $300 with a $100 retainer that is required to reserve your space for the Gala.

NOTE: We understand that your privacy is of the utmost importance to you at the Gala so we have staggered each mini-session with your privacy in mind. Each woman will arrive 1/2 hour prior to their scheduled session for makeup. After makeup, we'll begin your mini-session in a private session with myself or Elizabeth only. And if you'd like to bring a close girlfriend for moral support, please feel comfortable to do so!

These four businesses and the talented people who own and operate them are some of THE best Pittsburgh has to offer for creating spectacular events!

Simone Hudson of 5Senses Events Design was responsible for creating the look and feel of the room merging Carola + Shawn's ideas and dreams into actuality. Simone chose the chairs, linens, and designed the menu cards, table numbers and seating charts! Beautiful, Simone; simply bellissimo!

There, high atop the 31st floor of the old Alcoa building, now the Regional Enterprise Tower, a typical conference room with a fabulous view of the city was transformed into a haute couture wedding reception that was, to quote Simone, "Fierce!" Indeed it was, Simone; indeed it was!

Here is a small sampling of images that depict the result of the bride and groom's vision and the planning and execution of that vision by these spectacular and reputable wedding event experts. You see, if you have the right people doing what they do best the results will be stunning! Wonderful work, everyone...BRAVO! The bonus last Saturday night: there was a ballgame at PNC Park and fireworks followed! My images of the day/night are, well, to quote Simone again, "Fierce!"

Jenna and Jason had a lovely ceremony in Loretto then held their reception in Altoona, PA. Interwoven between, we were given special permission to use the beautiful grounds of the Charles M. Schwab Estate in Loretto (which is now the local Franciscan Friary) for photographs of the wedding party. There wasn't enough time for me to photograph like I wanted to, so it was a good thing we had already pre-planned to photo there again this Fall. We'll be headed back there soon for a post wedding romantic session where we are going to take our time to photograph, just the three of us...I can't wait!

I really dug the architecture of the church: Holy Name Catholic Church - it was way retro and looked like a flying saucer! HA! Seriously, it was so cool! 1970s all the way...BUT the ceremony was simply lovely and delightful...and beautiful too, with so many special touches like Jason's twin brother singing and Jason's father singing and playing the guitar - lots of creative talent in that family, I'll tell you.

The reception at the Ramada Inn and Conference Center, Altoona was PINK to the max! You've got to be a secure guy to deal with all that pink all day long! I'd say that Jason being surrounded in pink was a clear indication of how much he loves Jenna - enough to let her dreams come true on their wedding day! Jenna's Uncle, Greg Persio took excellent care of his niece and Jason - great job Uncle Greg!

I fell head-over-heels for Jenna's mom - oh my goodness! She is one of those little angels walking on the earth! Careful Jenna, I'm thinking of adopting her!!! Here's a photo of Jenna w/ her mom - so cute and the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, now, does it...

Music/DJ expertise at the reception was provided by none other than the FABULOUS Jeremy Ganss of Jeremy Ganss Productions He rocked the night away like the spin-doctor he is! Club it up, baby - nice musical job! You'll find one of my artsy images of Jeremy spinning at the end of the images below!
