THE BUCHANAN FAMILY!

Emma-Liza + Mike were clients of mine from a few years back. Their wedding was the first digital wedding I ever shot; it was May of 2003!  So, when I photographed their wedding, I double shot it using both film AND digital for just about every shot I did for a couple of reasons...

As their wedding photographer it was my responsibility to deliver on my promise to produce beautiful images for them, so even though I had worked with some of the first digital cameras - which were upwards of $30k! - I wasn't quite trustful of their capabilities yet.  Film was still "it" for me, but I after the success I had shooting Emma-Liza + Mike's wedding digitally, I made the transition and have photographed all subsequent weddings after theirs digitally.

Here's one of my signature images I used for many years from Emma-Liza + Mike's wedding:
JoanneBartone0261.jpg
Beautiful, right?!  I still love it; it was simply a magical image of them!

Shooting digitally came naturally to me because I was used to using chrome film to photograph with, which is a lot like digital work where you need to be precise while exposing. There were no RAW files to save your chrome exposures if they were bad, and Photoshop was still quite young, so you had to know what you were doing as a photographer FIRST.  Film has always had enough latitude to save anyone's images, but chrome film did not...I digress, but I believe this is important to understand; digital cameras do not make the photographer!

Anyway...fast-forward to now...to the BEAUTIFUL Buchanan family of 2010, photographed on Emma-Liza + Mike's seventh anniversary weekend!  This is one beautiful family, and it's one family I had hoped to photograph again, so was thrilled to know that they had returned to Pittsburgh after living out of town for a few years following their wedding.  I'm so happy to have reconnected with you and hope you thoroughly enjoy the images I've created!

A collage of the family:

And a few others to enjoy:

Look at that mischievous yet sweet-as-pie smile!

JoanneBartone0259.jpg

And how about this one; total joy!

JoanneBartone0260.jpg

Emma-Liza + Mike were perfect with the kids!  They made the shoot fun for them and turned reluctance into smiles much like this image below!  Thanks so much...I had a blast with you!

Pittsburgh Engagement Photography, Pittsburgh  Wedding Photography, Pittsburgh Baby Photography, Pittsburgh Children + Family Photography, Fine Art Photography by Joanne Bartone

It has been about a month since I've blogged - I have been shooting like mad since May!  Weddings, babies, children + family photography and a personal art project that I'm super excited about.  And, I'm also really excited about a few other things: putting myself first by outsourcing some of my production work, which has allowed me to have more time to shoot, and even more importantly, have more time to devote to taking Pilates and getting (back) into shape!

Being busy is always good, but it has meant that I've had to sit in front of my computer doing production work for hours - it can be rewarding visually, but hasn't been good for my body. So, priorities - better care of me means I can take better care of everything and everyone else!

Look for the blog to be updated with a swarm of images weekly from this week on - I do hope you'll enjoy it all!

It was another wonderful evening last week, when I photographed the members and guests of the Pittsburgh Chapter of ISES again at Phipps Conservatory.  Colleen Chorney, Special Event Coordinator at Phipps, was a gracious hostess, providing a beautiful Spring atmosphere for everyone to enjoy!

There was visual splendor in the foliage of the Tropical Forest Conservatory, delightful food, refreshingly fun spirits, and a relaxed atmosphere filled with camaraderie and conversation; a simply delightful way to spend an evening!

Here's a vignette collage of the event - ENJOY!

JULIA + DANIEL's WEDDING!

I first met Julia when I photographed military families of soldiers serving in Iraq/Afghanistan a short time ago.  She was engaged to Daniel, who was serving in Iraq at the time.  Little did I know that she/they would choose me as their wedding photographer!  ...lucky me!

Fast-forward to their wedding day; a beautiful celebration of Julia + Daniel's love and happiness, and Daniel's safe return home it was only fitting that they were married at St. Paul Cathedral in Oakland.

With stunning details such as Monolo Blahnik heels and a detailed grooms cake imported from the famed Charm City Cakes in Baltimore, Julia's vision for their wedding included a lot of color brimming with details that transformed Jay Verno Studio into a magical reception site!  I always tell couples using this studio as their reception venue to light it well in order to produce beautiful images - after all, you need light to make photographs. I can say with confidence that my/our photography is a testament to stellar planning and the good lighting used, resulting in stunning images from the event!  Event planner and delightfully lovely Katherine Shaw of Trends to Tradition helped make Julia's vision a reality through design and planning that was incomparable!  Surrounded by their warm, funny and loving family and friends, Julia + Danie's wedding day was simply a memorable delight.

Enjoy the highlight images from Julia + Daniel's day, and feel free to have a look and share them from the Joanne Bartone Photography FaceBook page too!

JOANNE BARTONE PHOTOGRAPHY IS THE EXCLUSIVE PHOTOGRAPHER FOR THE HENNE JEWELERS DIAMOND DASH!

HenneJewelers.jpgRING SHOWN IS NOT THE ACTUAL PRIZE

I am proud to announce that Joanne Bartone Photography is one of the sponsors of + will be the exclusive photographer for the Henne Jewelers Diamond Dash coming up this weekend, Saturday May 22, 2010!

If you haven't heard about this exciting event, Henne Jewelers has arranged a high-tech city-wide treasure hunt to find a flawless $15,000 Mark Patterson diamond ring!  There is still time to register, so please click HERE if you'd like to participate.

I couldn't be more excited and honored to be partnering with the Henne Jewelers family who has brought beautiful jewelry, stellar customer service and has been a cornerstone of the Pittsburgh, PA business community since 1887!  Henne Jewelers has been the jeweler of choice for countless couples getting married, or those simply providing special gifts of jewelry to their family for GENERATIONS!  A trusted name and company, Henne Jewelers was where my ring was born!

Look for the winners to be announced following the event on Saturday!  I'll be posting a few images here on the blog by Sunday, since I have a wedding following the event!  :-)  ...busy, busy!

BIG love, Joanne Bartone Photographer  |  www.joannebartone.com  |  tele: 412.418.8075

PART 2: HENNE JEWELERS DIAMOND DASH RESULTS!

They came, two-by-two, not onto the Ark, - although the way it rained on Saturday, an ark might have been a great prop for one of the couples to have - but onto the North Shore near Heinz Field to partake in the thrill of the first (of what we hope will be many) Henne Jewelers Diamond Dash to find a flawless $15,000 Mark Patterson diamond ring by way of a high-tech treasure hunt throughout downtown Pittsburgh!

Hopes were high and despite the torrents of rain, there were no signs of anyone's spirit being dampened!  It was an exciting treasure hunt and many of the participants came for the fun of the adventure, thinking that the win would be nice icing on the cake.  Some were dressed in team attire, and some were dressed in their actual wedding attire!  They ran, biked, bladed and scooted throughout Pittsburgh, from location-to-location and clue-to-clue, reading, icing, dancing and texting as they traveled, and in the end they were fed by Bar Louie.  Then, one couple, married for five years - Leeanne + Bill Stickman - won the grand-prize based on accumulating the highest points.  It was a super fun adventure and simply a GREAT day, and it was powered by the folks at SCVNGR - great work everyone!  A big thank you goes out to John Henne, Meg Henne Gibson and the Henne Family for hosting such a great idea and event, and to Kiss 96.1's Mikey + Big Bob for the entertainment!

Enjoy the show - I thoroughly enjoyed capturing all the FUN of this event!

THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD LIGHTING SKILLS!

It has always been important to me to stretch my creative and technical abilities. This is why, even after having had a formal education in photography and working as a professional photographer for fifteen years I attend worthwhile workshops, but only if they are held by reputable instructors who have been actively involved in the field of photography themselves for over 8 years and have real photographic knowledge and expertise to share.  Even though I've been formally educated as a photographer, I feel it is important to continue to hone and refine my craft!

I've got great experience in studio lighting using 1200ws power-packs and with both on- and off-camera Speedlights, but I wanted to investigate what current tools were available using the wonderful portable Canon Speedlights. Viola!  I found and attended a great workshop recently, held by two of the best in the industry, that gave me EXACTLY what I was looking for; I loved it!  Here are some of the results - ENJOY!

HOLLY + CHRIS' ENGAGEMENT!

Here's the really cool scoop (and somewhat sad) on how Holly + Chris found me...

Holly had a friend Amy, who wanted me to be her photographer a year or two ago, but unfortunately, I was booked so I couldn't photograph her wedding.  Even more unfortunate was the fact that Amy was supremely disappointed with the photography by the photographer that she and her husband did hire - I really dislike these types of stories; they make me so sad.  But they are not uncommon, because there are a lot of so called photographers out there who really don't know what they are doing...I digress...  Because of Amy's bad experience, she wanted her good friend Holly to have a photographer who would make her dreams come true on her wedding day; enter me...lucky, lucky me and them too!  Amy referred Holly + Chris to me and they reserved my services sight-unseen.

Although I'm so sad for Amy and her husband that they had such a terrible experience with their wedding photographer, I feel so blessed and grateful when people trust me enough and love my work so much so that they are willing to refer me without even having me as their wedding photographer.  A HUGE "thank you" goes out to Amy, and I'll be photographing her family and baby as a thank you!  I'm so grateful that I'll have the chance to do this for them AND be Holly + Chris' wedding photographer!

Back to Holly + Chris...who are so darned PERFECT for one another...!

They will be getting married at Heinz Chapel, here in Pittsburgh in September of this year, so I thought it would be a nice jumping-off point for me/us to do the engagement photography.  We had a wonderful time together during our shoot, and they are going to make one-heck-of-a beautiful couple on their wedding day!  I can't wait to photograph them again!

Thank you Amy, for referring such a wonderful couple my way, and thank you Holly + Chris, for selecting me as your photographer!  ENJOY THE PHOTOS!

THE ART OF FINE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

It has been quite a while since I've made an entry in my blog, but I'm not inclined to be beating myself up over it any time soon as my philosophies towards myself are a-changing!  :-)

Here in Pittsburgh, PA, wedding season began last month and will be in full swing until the end of November.  It actually seems as if it has been extending longer and longer the past few years; it's starting earlier and ending later which is really quite wonderful.  The extension offers creative possibilities that are truly endless on so many levels!

As one of the top creative wedding photographers in Pittsburgh, I'm super excited to be providing some of the best wedding photography imaginable locally for my clients.  Wedding photography is such a passion for me - I get to create beautiful images and capture emotions and moments with new perspectives and fresh creative vision all as a result of the love that I get to witness! I LOVE my career - yes, "career!"  This is not a job, it's not a-part-time-for-extra-cash-thingy {nor has it ever been}, and it's not work.  Being an established and highly-regarded wedding photographer for over fourteen years is a delight, an adventure, and both a blessing and a gift!

Every season I enjoy challenging myself creatively!  One of my top goals each year is to NOT repeat poses so that each couple's wedding photography is created with a uniquely artistic bent.  I do this by tailoring my wedding photography to the subtle nuances of my couple's personalities that make them so special.  In the end, I delight in making them happy for years and years after their wedding through both my unobtrusive editorial {story telling} and artistic wedding photography.  I am clear; that day, that oh-so most important day is about my couples; it is not about me.  My heart and soul is spent creating and capturing and when I'm done, so is my body and brain!  All that creative energy that I expend is delicious delirium and great fun from which I get to create spectacular one-of-a-kind heirloom art pieces from, like this one:

JoanneBartone0032.jpg
Here's to the 2010 wedding season for ALL the couples getting married!  May it be filled with fun, wedded bliss and may all your dreams come true always, but especially on your wedding day!

Good Golly Miss Molly!
ISES Pittsburgh Chapter :: 01.2010

There was a LOT of fun happening last night in Oakland as the members and guests of the Pittsburgh Chapter of ISES enjoyed themselves thoroughly at the BURGERS, BOWLING & BANANA SPLITS event held at the  Pittsburgh Athletic Association

Many of the established members of the Greater Pittsburgh ISES Chapter and their wonderful guests, MPI Pittsburgh and Visit Pittsburgh were in atten-dance rocking the night away to a 1950s-themed event complete with a Soda Fountain, soda Jerks (no longer politically correct, I'm sure!), burgers, banana splits, bowling and 1950s "Hop" music provided by none other than the phenomenal Kelli Burns of Kelli Burns DJ Entertainment dressed in full 1950s regalia, complete with her own bowling shirt and white anklets!

Sheila Weiner, Ed Amori and Lori Upperman deserve a special thank you for putting the program together for everyone - as always, they did a wonderful job! It was a great opportunity for Pittsburgh ISES members and their guests to come together for a night of networking and merriment.  I thought I'd provide a sampling of images of the evenings happenings so everyone could see how much fun really does happen at an ISES event - ENJOY!

NOTE: MOUSE-OVER THE smaller PHOTOS ON THE RIGHT EVER SO SLOWLY to see them all!

A special "thank you" goes out to all the sponsors of the evening:
Joanne Bartone Photography - yep, that's me!  It was sooooo much FUN photographing everyone!
Kelli Burns DJ Entertainment - "the one and only" who REALLY set the mood and made the evening a truly enjoyable event!
Pittsburgh Athletic Association - Sally Fernandes and all the PAA staff did an outstanding job making the evening tasty for everyone!
The Prop Shop - who transformed the bowling alley of the PAA into a 1950s sock hop - fabulous!
Table Attire - whose turquoise and pink linens and center pieces topped off the decor perfectly!
and last, but never least...
ShutterBooth Pittsburgh! - prepared with props and strips of photo-fun that delighted all of us!

Here's a ShutterBooth photo strip of Burns + Bartone = Fun and Photography - what a blast!
